Morning: Depart Nairobi early (approx. 7:00 AM) and drive to Nanyuki town (4-5 hours). Stop at the Equator crossing and Nanyuki for lunch, where you’ll meet your climbing team (guide, porters, cook).
Trek: Drive to the Sirimon Gate (approx. 2,650m). After registering, begin the trek.
The path is a gentle ascent through beautiful montane forest, bamboo thickets, and giant heather, before emerging into the high-altitude moorland.
Night: Dinner and overnight stay at Old Moses Camp (also known as Judmier Camp) at 3,300m.
Trek: A longer, more gradual hike today, crucial for acclimatization. You’ll pass through open moorland, crossing the Liki North River, and enjoying panoramic views.
The trek takes you into the spectacular Mackinder’s Valley, characterized by its unique giant lobelias and groundsels.
Views: Look up the valley for breathtaking views of the main peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana.
Night: Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp at 4,200m. This camp is situated directly below the jagged peaks, providing a surreal high-mountain setting. Rest early for the summit attempt.
Summit Attempt (3:00 AM): Wake up around 2:00 AM for a light breakfast/tea. Begin the strenuous 3-4 hour pre-dawn climb up a steep, rocky path and scree slope towards the summit.
Sunrise: Aim to reach Point Lenana (4,985m) just before sunrise (around 6:30 AM) for spectacular views of the African plains, and on a very clear day, even Mount Kilimanjaro.
Descent: After photos and a short celebration, begin the descent back to Shipton’s Camp (approx. 2 hours) for a well-deserved full breakfast.
Final Descent: After breakfast, continue the long descent (4-5 hours) back down the Mackinder’s Valley to Old Moses Camp (3,300m).
Night: Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Camp. Sleeping at a lower altitude helps recovery and acclimatization.
Trek: Enjoy a final, easy morning trek (2-3 hours) descending through the forest zone.
Finish: Arrive back at the Sirimon Gate (2,650m) where you’ll sign out of the park.
Transfer: Meet your vehicle and transfer back to Nanyuki for lunch, before continuing the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon/early evening.
